Melissa Magsaysay & Sara Riff
November marks the start of the giving season, but giving means many things for multi-tasking women balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, making a difference, and time to call their own. This month, Co-Founders of The Hive, an online destination for new moms and beyond, share how they balance the demands of the holidays without compromising their style, sanity, or do-good attitudes. Oh, did we mention they also hold roles as Jimmy Choo Dir. of Entertainment Relations & Fashion Journalist, respectively.
...ON THE HIVE, THEHIVEMAG.COM
What was the inspiration to start The Hive?
At the time, we were new mothers with careers in fashion and seeking an online destination and resource where we saw our lives and creative interests reflected. Women are multi-dimensional, constantly juggling and living full lives with family, career and being active in the community and we always strive to speak to those women and their needs, be they sartorial or addressing modern parenting concerns. We love creating a forum where women can share their experiences as mothers...the good, the bad and the ugly! The Hive is a destination for women who don't want to go it alone through modern motherhood.
Can you give us a little insider scoop on what or who you’re profiling for the holidays?
We’ll be profiling inspiring and strong women like Erica Chidi Cohen, doula and author, who make it a priority to give back and be dynamic and well rounded.
Describe your style in 3 words or less.
Sara: Feminine with an Edge.
Melissa: Classic, laid back, polished.
What’s your fashion mantra?
Sara: Too much of a good thing can be divine.
Melissa: Dress for how you want to feel.
Dressed up or dressed down for Thanksgiving?
Sara: Dressed Up!
Melissa: Dressed Up! We host Thanksgiving and I like to look slightly dressed up but still comfortable, of course.
What are your fail-safe pieces to help make dressing fast and fashionable for anything from holiday fetes to every day occasions?
Sara: Black leather jacket, cashmere sweater, chic black skirt.
Melissa: Lace blouse, black velvet loafers, statement sleeve sweater, high waist classic straight leg jeans.
…..ON HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
Do you have any holiday traditions?
“Each year, we work with charities like Baby2Baby and GoodPlus to adopt families in need.”
What does that entail and how do you incorporate your own children?
“Typically the charities will organize wish lists for underprivileged families and their kids based on their ages and interests. We love getting our own children involved as a way to shift their focus away from their own wants and towards the many local families in need. We're hoping to build empathy and a sense of responsibility to do your best to support everyone you can.”
What does that look like on a practical level?
"It normally involves a big shopping trip to Target to pick up everything from toys to clothing and requires a lot of discipline from our own kids not to pick out everything for themselves.
…ON BALANCING MOTHERHOOD WITH MOGULHOOD
How do you like to carve out time for yourself to feel centered and recharged?
“We both love to travel as much as possible for a little time away. This can be a bigger trip from time to time, to a weekend get a way near by. Either way, a change of scenery and some time alone with husband or friends is always key. Mediation, exercise and donating our time to our respective charities to help others are all ways that make us feel grounded and grateful.
While alone time is always nice, it’s seldom possible with young kids. That’s why a place like Au Fudge is amazing. We can let the kids run around in the playroom or tree house while we grab dinner and a drink and talk life and business. It’s always a warm and welcoming place with plenty of charm and really good food and delicious cocktails. We don’t feel like we’re compromising between “our” and “their” time. We’re all in once place that we all love.”
Do you have a standing night out or is it more spontaneous?
Sara: A standing night date would actually require planning and commitment, so it does tend to be a bit spontaneous so long as childcare is available.
Melissa: What does "spontaneous" mean again? Kidding - I wish we could, but with kids there's always a little more planning involved.
Are there any favorite la spots you like to hit for a night out with friends or your husbands?
Sara: I love Cafe Stella, Sawyer, Marvin and of course The Sunset Tower.
Melissa: Pace in Laurel Canyon, AOC or Little Door some of my favorite spots.
